At Advance ESG, we see how corporations have an outsized impact on our world. And so we can change the world by changing how corporations do business. We do this by understanding what makes corporations tick and using these wants and needs to motivate them to operate in ways that will make the world a better place for us all.
Advance ESG is a non-profit online community working to protect the climate and promote human rights by making corporations more environmentally and socially responsible. Too often, the policies made in boardrooms have widespread consequences, but only a small number of people are involved in the process.
Advance ESG members are changing that paradigm.
What is ESG?
Business loves a good acronym, and we’re no different. ESG stands for “Environmental, Social, and Governance.” It’s shorthand for the issues that corporations need to address to assure their policies are better for the planet and the people on it.
Environmental issues are things that impact our biophysical world, such as climate change, deforestation, and habitat destruction.
Social issues include economic uncertainty, human rights violation, the housing crisis, and more.
Governance refers to how corporations are controlled and operated by their boards of directors, managements, and investors.
How we do we create change?
We start with what we know about corporations.
Their priority is short-term profit.
They are owned by their shareholders.
They exist because the public supports them.
Let’s work with that.
Advance ESG advocates on behalf of our membership to change corporate priorities. We’re pro-business but also believe that businesses need to change.
We begin by making the business case for change. Many corporate practices aren’t actually the most profitable in the long run. We show these corporations that they will do better financially when they make decisions that are better for people and the planet. Let us show you how.
If there’s no traction with the business case, we take it to the owners: the shareholders. We submit shareholder resolutions on behalf of our members to instruct their management to make the needed changes. Let us show you how.
Still no traction? Then we use public pressure to impact their bottom line. We ask our membership and the general public to vote for change with their wallets. This is where we can all directly make a huge difference. Let us show you how.
